ProblemsWithComputer.com Presents
Another Video In The
“A Clean Computer is a Happy Computer” Series.

I saw somewhere that 90% of the laptops that are stolen are never recovered.  So if you only have a laptop user data backups are critical.

It’s too bad but the portability of your computer which is a major benefit, is also one of it’s main liabilities.
Laptops are a easy a target for thieves to take advantage of.

Most people have lots of files and documents they want to have available to use in the future and get fast access to the files.

For Example:

1. Personal Documents

2. Work Documents – Personal & Business Records

3. User Names & Passwords

4. Family Photos

5. Videos

6. Links to Favourite Websites

And the list goes on……

However today’s files and media that we get from the internet can quickly fill up your hard drive.

I collect too many funny You Tube videos for example, and my music collection is huge.

Here’s a question – how many hours of work did you put in creating the content and storing it?  Can you find it quickly?

How many hours would it take to restore everything if your hard drive died?

How much time are you spending to do your backup?

Or, have you not done any backups because of the time and work involved?

You can answer that yourself.

I just have too many hours of time invested, and I’m not getting any younger.

So how do you back up?

Is It:

1. Floppy Disk (Only useful for emergency boot)

2. CD’s & DVDs?

Cost effective but awkward.

The biggest problem with this type of backup is that you have all those disks, but you have to create a database or an index to tell you what you got and which disk it is on.  And then you may have to find a safe location to store your backup disks, in case of a local disaster like a fire.

3. Extra Hard Drives Internal & External.

Fast and Convenient.

However these items have the same problem as your main hard drive, they will wear out and fail eventually.

Removable Drives Don’t Help In A Fire Or When Stolen.

Tapes Wear Out.

Backup To DVD Is Tedious.

Also the amount of things we keep just getting larger and larger.

Then add the stuff that your family members want to save and keep.

How do we make the local backup process fast and easy?

For backups to another local drive I would suggest GoodSync here is a link to a a free download of that product.

http://tinyurl.com/y9fpmkz

Download It! It works great!

Ok, that software solves the problem of fast backups to your extra or external hard drives.

I allways try to have at least two backups, but three is better.

Here is the best option that I am starting to use

- Backup to a server online.

Here is an example of how I use that right now.

I use RoboForm to store and manage all of my many user names and passwords that I use.

The last update that I installed gives me the ability to save all of my information online and it works perfectly with GoodSync.

I still back it up locally to a external hard drive, and a USB drive.

But the online backup is so slick.

Ok, that is an important but small part of my data.

So how do I deal with the rest with less work?

After looking around for a while for a off site backup solution, I have found something that I like.

It’s an online backup service called Keepit.

What I like about this service.

1.  Unlimited Storage.

2.  The data is encrypted, only you can see your files.

3.  Low Cost  $4.95 per month, for the single computer unlimited backup version of the service.

For me this is less than the cost of the CD’s that I used to use each month to back up my new material.

I also save time, the program does all the work.

There is a Pro version for people with more than one computer.  It costs $3.95 per machine.  The user terms are slightly different.
The Pro version of the program is also good for business use.

4.  Simple and Automatic I don’t have to do anything other than get my account, create a password, and backup my encryption code.

The software launches when you start your computer and works in the background to backup your computer while you work.

Don’t worry it won’t slow down your machine.

5.  The service backs up my file in two locations with redundant power and fast connections to the internet.

6.  Peace of mind, now I know that my family photos are backed up, so now if my hard drive fails or I lose my laptop I know that I will have a good backup and can get my photos again.

However there is one problems with the service, but it is not the fault of the backup system.

The first backup may take a long time.

Here’s why.

The internet was designed around the need for fast download speeds. However the average upload speed very slow.  The average upload speed is about 512k.

A quick example:

If you have an upload speed of 512 kbit, you can upload 3 MB per minute.

That is approximately 6 hours for 1 GB.  If you have 10 GB files (songs, pictures etc.) the backup will take up to 3 days the first time.

However, after doing the first backup, Keepit will only backup new or changed files. (Keepit can actually stop at only saving the changed part of a large file).

So after the first long backup it should be fairly fast.

That is why the program starts every time you start your computer.

The first backup may take several days to complete.

It would be nice to have it done faster but the only way around that is change your internet service for a faster upload speed, and that can be expensive.

To get a fast upload speed you usually will need to get a business account.

The good news is that the download speed is allot faster, so if you need to retrieve some files it will not take you allot of time to get them.

This is a problem, but is not really an issue if you have not been doing any backups at all.

A slow backup is better than no backup.

And again, after the first backup, backups are fast because only changed files need to be updated on the servers.
