Why I wrote Care & Feeding of the Home & Business Computers V.1 Part 2 of 3

Part Two: What I Did

Why I wrote Care & Feeding Of The Home & Business Computer V.1

I am sure that you have heard the phrase “Knowledge Is Power!”

I wanted to give my customers the knowledge and power to learn how to setup and maintain their computers so they could get full benefit from their computer purchase.

When I teach people about computers I try to take a way their fear regarding computers by holding up various tools like vice grips or screw drivers, or even a toaster and ask them if the felt intimidated by the tool I was holding.

The answer is usually no they are not.

I then tell them that they should think of the computer as just another tool, a toaster, but a fancy one.

That usually breaks the ice.

Only show it the same respect you would give to any other tool that you own.

Once I put the relative importance of the computer in their lives in its rightful place, they could start to use it effectively.

This helped them focus on what they want  to do with the computer, and get away from the silly idea that they have to know everything about a computer before they can use it.

They don’t have to feel bad when they understand that they don’t.

I certainly don’t know everything.

You can ask both of my X-wives!

This industry is changing, and the technology is as well all the time, just like in most other industries and products.

Just look at the car and how much it has changed in just the last 40 years.   But does that stop us from using it?  I don’t think so!

In the big scheme of things knowing about computers is not really all that important to most people.

I would think it is much more important to know how to motivate and influence your teenager going thru a difficult time than knowing everything about a computer.

I wish I could have had more insight about my own son.

I regret not knowing more in that area.

The good news is that a lot of the regular steps to keep your computer updated and running smoothly can be automated with programs already on your computer, and can be setup once and generally you can forget about it.

I looked at the problem from my customer’s viewpoint.

I decided to do what no one else was doing (Other resellers of computers. I have never found anyone who does this.)

I built in training time into all of my computer prices and spent as much time as was needed training all of my customers on basic computer use.

And more importantly the needed to implement the safety and security measures needed to make their computer experience trouble free as possible.

I also made sure during each computer sale I made, at the very least that every customer received at least a basic surge suppressor that helped to protect their  systems from Hydro and telephone lines surges.

However, I also wanted to be able to give them something to follow up their training and keep my name in front of them.

Therefore, I wrote a document as a hand out for prospective customers and current customers.

This also gave me the ability to call my clients regularly to follow up and make sure that they were following the program.

I could often be found giving a doctor or a lawyer who was my customer grief for not following my instructions.

They though it was great!
