Problems With Computer – More Help With Computer Freeze-Ups

Hello Every One!

Today I am going to continue with my discussion regarding computer freeze-up problems.

I previously talked about how simply rebooting your computer will normally solve most of your freezing problems automatically.

However sometimes the problem can be more serious.

If your freeze up is on a particular program, a uninstall and a fresh installation of the particular program may be the solution.

If the problem is more random you may want to take other measures.

The first thing you may want to do is make sure your windows updates are complete (see my post on Automatic Windows Updates).

If that is ok and you still have problems you may want to check the files of your operating system to make sure that they are not corrupted by virus and worms. This can hamper the use of your computer and cause the unexplained errors and freezes.

This operation will make sure all the necessary operating system files are present and valid.

For this you will need your Windows XP installation disk.

Here are the steps;

  1. Click On Start.
  2. Click Run.
  3. Type “CMD” then press enter. You will then get a window with a black screen where you will see a DOS prompt.
  4. A the DOS prompt type “Type SFC /SCANNOW” then press enter. The scan will scan your operating system and see what files are missing or corrupt and copy them from the DVD and replace the files with a problem.A little window will pop up that says “Windows File Protection” Please wait while Windows verifies that all protected windows files are intact and in their original versions.

You can close the DOS window after this program starts to run.

There is a cancel button on this window you can use to stop the operation.

Once this is done and file have to be copied from your Windows install disk another window will pop up.

It may say something like “Files that are required for Windows to run properly must be copied to the DLL Cache”.

  5. Simply Insert Your Windows System Install CD.If a “Welcome to Windows XP Screen” opens you can just close it, you do not need anything on that screen right now.The files that need to be copied will be transferred to your computer at this time.

This may take a quite a while depending on how many files need to be replaces so be patient.

The last time I ran this it took over an hour to complete.

There is a progress bar to see the program working.

There is a cancel button on this window you can use to stop the operation.

When the process is done the program window automatically closes.

You can then remove your Windows XP disk from your drive and store it away again.

    You are done.

This may or may not help with your system problems.

But I hope it does.

I usually run this about once a month.
