How Do You Back Up Your Stuff?
How Do You Back
Up Your Stuff?
Hello Everyone!
Today I am going to talk about backing up your Stuff.
I could say data, but that is “geek talk”.
So when I say Stuff I am talking about anything that you may not want to lose.
1. Personal Documents
2. Work Documents
3. User Names & Passwords
4. Family Photos
5. Videos
6. Links to Favorite Websites
And the list goes on……
Most people have lots of stuff they want to have available to use in the future and access quickly.
However today’s files and media that we can get from the internet can quickly fill up your hard drive.
I collect too many funny You Tube videos for example, and my music collection is huge, so the storage of my iTunes files takes alot of room as well.
So everyone has alot of project, personal, and work related files stored on their computers.
Here’s a question – how many hours of work did you put in creating the content or storing it where you could find it?
Probably more hours than you think!
How many hours would you like put in restoring every thing if your hard drive died?
You can answer that yourself, but if faced with that prospect, I just have too many hours of time invested, and I’m not getting any younger.
So how do you back up?
Here is some of the ways that I have available to me.
1. Floppy Disk (Only useful for emergency boot)
2. CD’s & DVD’s Cost effective but awkward.
Got all those disks but you have to create a database or a index of what you got and which disk the stuff you want is on.
3. Extra Hard Drives Internal & External. Fast and Convieniant.
However these items have the same problem as your main hard drive, they will wear out and fail eventually.
Removable Drives Don’t Help In A Fire Or When Stolen. Tapes Wear Out.
Backup To Dvd Is Tedious.
Also there is the problem of the ever expanding stuff we keep.
Then add the stuff that your family members want to save and keep.
That adds up to alot of Stuff fast.
Then there is the problem of how to make the backup process fast and easy.
I would suggest GoodSync for that here is the link for a free download of that product.
Download It! It works great!
Ok, that software solves the problem of fast backups to your hard drives.
I would also suggest you have more than one back up – I always try to have at least two backups, but three is better.
Here is the best option that I am starting to use – Backup to a server online.
Here is an example of how I use that right now.
I use RoboForm to store and manage all of my many user names and passwords that I use.
The last update that I installed gives me the ability to save all of my information on line and it works perfectly with GoodSync.
I still back up locally to one of my hard drives but the online is so slick.
I can backup RoboForm from the tool bar, or within the GoodSync Program which I prefer to do.
I open GoodSync and go to the saved tab called RoboForm and click on it to make it active.
Then I click analyze and the program will automatically login to RoboForm’s servers where I have an existing backup and compare it with the one on my desktop.
It tells me what files have changed and the new ones.
I have it setup to only backup to the server so when I backup all the new password files are uploaded and the ones that I deleted on my desktop are also deleted on the server as well.
Done like Dinner!
This is a very fast operation for me because I have a fast internet service provider, who I am bugging for a faster upload speed at a reasonable cost.
I have looked at several online solutions and here is one that I am looking at but am not using yet.
Here is a link to it, please let me know what you think.
I would like to hear your opinion about this service on this blog.
All the Best!
